Human Factors in Aviation encompasses all elements affecting human performance, which is critical from the design stage to ensure human-centric products. Organisations must have a Human Factors Programme for safety and compliance.
A Human Factors Programme focuses on safety culture, managing human error, understanding human performance, and considering environmental and procedural factors. It emphasises teamwork, professionalism, error reporting, and feedback.
The types of Human Errors are categorised into slips and lapses (execution errors), mistakes (rule-based or knowledge-based), and violations (routine, exceptional, and reckless).
The Dirty Dozen identifies twelve common contributors to human error in aviation, aiding risk mitigation through targeted training and system design.
The Swiss Cheese Model illustrates how accidents occur when multiple smaller errors align, emphasising the need for robust defences and safeguards.
Part 2 - The Relationship Between Human-Centred AI (HCAI) and Aviation Human Factors
Governing HCAI involves ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed prioritising human welfare, values, and ethical considerations. Key aspects include ethical design, accountability, privacy protection, building trust, inclusivity, regulatory compliance and societal sensitivity.
The HCAI Governance Layers are essential to achieving robust governance. They include the Government, the Industry, the Organisations Using AI and Organisations Designing AI.
The responsibilities of HCAI are typically distributed among the different layers, each playing specific roles to ensure the effective and ethical use of AI.
Part 3 - AI's positive Impact on Aviation Human Factors
AI can play a significant role in mitigating human factors issues, maintaining airworthiness, and enhancing safety in aviation.
AI can also significantly enhance safety and efficiency in aviation by addressing human factors issues such as communication, complacency, knowledge gaps, distractions, teamwork, fatigue, resource management, pressure, assertiveness, stress, awareness, and detrimental norms. It achieves this through advanced tools like automated alerts, predictive maintenance, personalised learning, and real-time monitoring.
In organisational culture and leadership, AI can improve decision-making, transparency, and communication. It can also personalise employee experiences, foster innovation, and support global operations with data-driven insights and automated processes.
Part 4 - Emerging Human Factors Challenges Due to AI Adoption in Aviation
AI in aerospace brings both advancements and new challenges, similar to any emerging technology. Human factors are crucial in this industry, and they must be considered when integrating AI to ensure safety and effectiveness. This introduces the concept of Human-Centred AI (HCAI), where AI systems are designed around human needs.
One major issue is training. If engineers are not adequately trained on AI's capabilities and limitations, they might misuse or misunderstand these tools, leading to errors. Adapting to AI technology can also be challenging, as resistance or improper implementation can compromise safety. There is also the risk of over-reliance on AI, where users might depend too much on AI without fully understanding its limitations.
The design of AI systems plays a significant role too. Poorly designed interfaces and unclear feedback can confuse users, increasing the likelihood of operational errors. Inconsistent AI recommendations can erode trust, leading to valuable insights being disregarded or, conversely, flawed outputs being overly relied upon.
The complexity of AI can also make decision-making more difficult for users, and data biases can perpetuate poor decisions. Additionally, the "black box" nature of some AI systems can hinder user trust and verification.
Supervision is another area of concern. AI integration can disrupt team dynamics and communication patterns, and assumptions about AI's capabilities can lead to important tasks being overlooked or improperly executed.
On an organisational level, poor data quality and inadequate data security can jeopardise AI outputs and operational integrity. Integration issues can disrupt workflows, and failure to comply with ethical and regulatory standards can result in legal penalties and safety compromises.
Organisational readiness is crucial; without it, AI implementation can face resistance, and its potential benefits may not be fully realised. Outdated or unclear standard operating procedures can further cause confusion and safety risks.
Part 5 - Understanding EASA's Building Block #3: A Deep Dive into Regulatory Compliance
AI Explainability is essential to prevent user confusion and operational errors. Poorly designed AI interfaces and inconsistent recommendations can impact trust, while the complexity of AI systems can overwhelm users.
Data biases can lead to poor decisions, and the "black box" nature of AI hinders transparency. To address these issues, AI systems must provide understandable information on their decision-making processes.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) emphasises that as AI levels increase, new design principles should address specific end-user needs, ensuring trust and operational safety.
Key audiences for AI explainability include flight crews, air traffic control officers, and maintenance engineers. The objectives focus on operational explainability and monitoring AI outputs to maintain confidence in operations.
Human-AI Teaming is about fostering cooperative and collaborative interactions between users and AI systems to achieve common goals.
The nature of this interaction varies with the maturity level of the AI system. At Level 2A, AI assists users with predefined tasks and directive guidance, while at Level 2B, AI collaborates with users towards shared goals, requiring real-time adjustments and shared situational awareness.
Trust and clear communication are vital for effective Human-AI Teaming. EASA's guidance distinguishes between cooperation, where AI directs users, and collaboration, where AI and users work together co-constructively.
Part 6 - Future Directions and Integration Strategies for HF and AI in Aviation
The success of AI in aerospace organisations relies on integrating Human Factors with AI, focusing on airworthiness decisions and broader applications.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) plans to extend rigorous certification requirements across all domains, emphasising the need to incorporate Human Factors into AI systems.
Human-Centred AI prioritises the needs and capabilities of humans, ensuring AI systems enhance rather than replace human performance. Key aspects include user-centric design, ethical considerations, transparency, safety, and regulatory compliance. This approach reduces cognitive load and potential errors, improving overall safety and efficiency.
Effective AI integration requires robust change management, addressing the common pitfalls of poor planning and lack of readiness. Preparing, planning, implementing, and monitoring changes ensure the smooth adoption of AI technologies.
Strong organisational governance is crucial for ethical and effective AI deployment. Establishing policies, standards, and frameworks guides AI development, aligning with organisational values and regulatory standards. This includes ethical guidelines, compliance, risk management, and performance metrics.
Cultivating an AI-ready culture involves leadership commitment, a clear vision, and an open mindset. Encouraging innovation and viewing mistakes as learning opportunities help organisations adapt to AI technologies.
