The 10 rules of Ikigai (生き甲斐)
Discover the concept of Ikigai, its 10 guiding principles for a fulfilling life, and how it promotes well-being and purpose.
I have recently come across the concept of Ikigai - 生き甲斐, a Japanese philosophy that has profoundly resonated with me.
Ikigai is about identifying what makes your life truly worthwhile, filling it with genuine purpose, satisfaction, and joy. It’s often described as your 'reason for being.'
Or one I love which is “the hapiness of always being busy”.
There's a common misconception that Ikigai revolves around finding the perfect job by answering these four questions:
What do you love doing?
What could you get paid for?
What are you skilled at?
What's good for the world?
However, Ikigai transcends career or business aspirations. It is a deeply personal journey, one that helps you discover what makes you excited to wake up in the morning, provides you with focus, adds meaning to your life, and fuels your sense of fulfilment.
Which are the 10 rules or principles of Ikigai?
Let’s dive in! 🤿
The 10 Ikigai principles
The 10 Rules or Principles of Ikigai are guidelines often cited to help individuals discover and live their Ikigai.
These rules encapsulate a lifestyle that promotes well-being, longevity, and happiness.
These are:
Stay active, never retire: Staying active and engaged in life is essential. Retirement, in the traditional sense, doesn’t exist. Continue doing what you love and feel needed in your community.
Take it slow: Life is not a race. Enjoy each moment and savor the journey. Slowing down helps you appreciate the small things that contribute to a happy and fulfilling life.
Don’t fill your stomach: In line with the Japanese practice of “Hara Hachi Bu,” which means eating until you are 80% full, this rule advocates moderation, particularly in diet. Overeating can be detrimental to health.
Surround yourself with good friends: Nurturing strong social connections and friendships contributes to a longer and happier life. These relationships provide emotional support, laughter, and a sense of belonging.
Get in shape for your next birthday: Regular physical activity is key to maintaining health and vitality. It doesn’t have to be intense; even light exercise or daily walks can make a significant difference.
Smile: A positive attitude and a smile can brighten your day and the days of those around you. Smiling is also linked to reduced stress and improved mood.
Reconnect with nature: Spending time outdoors and in nature is important for mental and physical health. Nature provides tranquility, inspiration, and a sense of connection to the world.
Give thanks: Regularly giving thanks helps you focus on the good rather than what’s lacking, promoting contentment and positivity.
Live in the moment: Mindfulness, or being present in the here and now, allows you to fully experience life. It helps reduce stress and increases your appreciation of everyday moments.
Follow your Ikigai: Pursue your passions and interests that give you a sense of purpose. Whether it’s work, hobbies, or volunteering, finding and following your Ikigai will bring fulfillment and satisfaction.
That’s all for today.
See you next week. 👋
