Managing Change: Are You Ready? [Part 1]
Change management is crucial, demanding meticulous planning. Recognise it as a discipline, adopt a professional approach, ensuring successful transformation by evaluating your readiness for Change.
Change is non-negotiable for growth and evolution.
As the saying goes:
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
Progress demands change.
However, the ability to manage change can determine success.
You might not be ready for a change.
In fact, studies consistently show that between 50% and 70% of most major organisational changes fail due to poor planning, lack of preparation, and insufficient consideration of readiness and the human aspect of change.
Focusing narrowly on business cases, technology, and high-level project plans contributes to this failure.
Are you someone who 'gets on with it,' or do you meticulously plan and stay vigilant from start to finish?
My professional journey in Safety and Quality departments in the aerospace industry has shown me that Change Management is not only about having a process; it's also about culture and mindset
In today’s newsletter, I’m introducing Change Management and emphasizing the importance of being ready.

What is Change Management?
Change management is the process of preparing, planning, implementing, and monitoring changes to an organisation's processes, systems, or structures.
The goal of change management is to facilitate a smooth transition from the old way of doing things to the new way while minimizing disruption and ensuring that the desired outcomes are achieved.
In fact, Change Management is a discipline in itself, and there are standards available to provide a framework that organisations can use to develop their own Change Management process tailored to specific needs and requirements.
Which Standards are available?
For today’s newsletter, I've referenced the Standard for Change Management from The Association of Change Management Professional (ACMP).
However, there are a few other references available that organisations can use as frameworks to guide their Change Management processes.
I'm providing links to some interesting references:
Kotter's 8-Step Model: It provides a framework for managing organisational change. It includes eight steps, starting with creating a sense of urgency and ending with anchoring new approaches in the organisation's culture.
Agile Change Management: Agile change management is an approach that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement. It is based on the principles of agile software development and is particularly suited to fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Main Process Groups in Change Management
Change Management involves several steps as illustrated below, and the first step focuses on the Evaluation of Change Impact and Organisational Readiness.
Are you ready for Change?
One of the first questions the organisation has to address is:
Are we ready for Change?
An evaluation of the effects and readiness for change is required before formulating any plans.
In accordance with the Standard for Change Management, this process encompasses the below activities:
Define the Change
Determine why the Change is required
Develop a Clear Vision for the future State
Identify Goals, Objectives and Success Criteria
Identify Sponsors Accountable for the Change
Identify Stakeholders Affected by the Change
Assess the Change Impact
Assess Alignment of the Change with Organizational Strategic Objectives
and Performance Measurement
Assess External Factors that May Affect Organizational Change
Assess Organization Culture(s) Related to the Change
Assess Organizational Capacity for Change
Assess Organizational Readiness for Change
Assess Communication Needs, Communication Channels, and Ability to
Deliver Key Messages
Assess Learning Capabilities
Conduct Change Risks Assessment
Conclusions
In conclusion, Change management is crucial for organisations, enhancing efficiency, cutting costs, and boosting overall performance.
However, it's challenging, demanding meticulous planning, effective communication, and collaboration among stakeholders.
Also, recognising it as a discipline, standards such as those from ACMP provide frameworks tailored to specific organisational needs.
The pivotal question remains: Are you ready for Change?
The activities listed in the first step, 'Evaluation of Change Impact and Organisational Readiness,' are extensive. However, it's not merely a formality; it can prevent failure.
Just as a builder assesses the foundation before constructing a building, an organisation evaluates its readiness before embarking on transformative initiatives.
My final takeaway: Adopt a professional approach to Change Management within your organisation to ensure a successful transformation.
